"God Switched My Rock"

(...continued from the home page.)

Faith Mission was Katie’s choice.

She knows she has to address the “roots of the problem” if she has any hope of conquering her addictions.

Katie knows a lot about roots.

Born and raised on a farm in Woodstock, IL, she came from what seemed like “the perfect family.” But behind closed doors, there was abuse…psychological, emotional, verbal and sexual.

Her brothers responded by becoming addicts, and Katie tried to take care of them – to “hide” their addictions from the family.

“I thought that if I were the perfect kid… getting straight A’s in school, being on all the sports teams…I could keep everything together. But by trying to hold our family together, I was falling apart.”

Katie began drinking and using cocaine at 15. And she used for the next 15 years…half of her life lost to drugs. Years of abuse, rapes and prostitution followed. Finally, enough was enough. This time, Katie was the one who decided she needed help!

“I did the research to find the place. I set up steps that I needed to do. Instead of saying, ‘What’s going to be the best fit for me – what’s reasonable, what’s affordable, location-wise?’, I asked God to give me the Holy Spirit’s peace.”

Katie found peace and help at Faith Mission in our Training Faithful Women Program.

It wasn’t easy. “My whole perspective had to change,” Katie says. “I couldn’t look at this as just another program; more of the same classes, another case manager. I love it here because God orchestrated this.”

Katie goes back to her time on the farm as she talks about how much Faith Mission and its staff members have helped her. “It’s not just about planting seeds,” she says. “You have to work up the ground; you need to pick the rocks up. Right now, I’m in the stage of letting God work up that ground and making it fertile – removing some of those stones and digging up some of those roots so that He can plant those seeds in the best possible soil.”

Today, Katie truly believes she is living the life God wants her to live.

“I’ve tried so many times to quit. Now, I’ve surrendered to Him, and I know I have a higher calling on my life.”
